Special Worksh0p:
FMA Traditional Styles

March 11, 2017

Location:
Fitness By Design (upstairs gym)
1355 W. 96th Street
Indianapolis, IN 46260

Grandmaster Laura Armstrong has studied extensively in the Philippines, and in this workshop shares traditional styles only rarely taught in North America. This will be a FULL DAY, and the classes will be as follows:

-BASIC WORKSHOP-

Espada y daga
(
9 am - 11 am)
In this long range system, practitioners will learn both attack and defense striking patterns of the stick and dagger.  This includes, blade and stick striking/blocking as well as footwork movement.  This traditional FMA system is rich in history and culture.  If time allows we will then continue with applications of the striking pattern.

Hand/stick applications
(
11 am - 1 pm)
The relationship between the stick and hand applications will be taught.  Disarms, takedowns and other submissions are used to show how stick to stick and stick to hand technique are similar and can be used effectively with or without weapons.  The translation and applications of weapons/hand to hand training is one of the reasons that Arnis/Kali/Escrima is such an effective martial art.

Knife (2-4 pm)
In this blade class, control, disarms, strips and return to sender will be taught using the 4 psongs (corners) of the body, including proper striking and cutting using a blade anyo (form).

-EXTENDED WORKSHOP-

Rope Fighting (4:30 - 5:30 pm)
The Pananandata rope fighting class is a traditional FMA long range system that includes basics of how to control the rope using different striking patterns as well as directional changes.  Both trapping of the limbs as well as chokes and blade disarm will be taught.  This class has a limited number of participants.
Mano y Mano / dulo y dulo (using kubotons)
5:30 - 6:30 pm
This class will focus on Hand to Hand techniques including passing, controls, lock flow, chokes and takedowns.  Effective striking and technique control is then translated to applications with the dulo dulo or short kuboton.  This effective weapon is accessible, easy to use, and a great self defense tool.
